What Is the Federal Battery Rebate?

The Federal Battery Rebate is the Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program. It launched on 1 July 2025 and gives households and small businesses an upfront discount on approved battery systems between 5 and 50 kWh of usable storage.

Since 1 May 2026 the rebate is tiered by battery size:

  • First 14 kWh of usable capacity: full rate, currently around $250 per kWh
  • 14 to 28 kWh: around 60% of the full rate
  • 28 to 50 kWh: around 15% of the full rate

The full rate drops at scheduled intervals until the program ends in 2030, so the rebate you receive depends on your battery size and your installation date.

Am I Eligible for the Federal Battery Rebate in Toowoomba?

To qualify for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program you need to meet these conditions:

  • You own or occupy the property (homes and small businesses are eligible)
  • The battery is between 5 and 50 kWh of usable capacity and is on the Clean Energy Council approved list
  • The battery is installed with new or existing solar panels
