Quick answer: what do I do if I get an Ergon or Energex defect notice?

Read the notice and note the defect described and the deadline. Then book a licensed electrician as soon as possible. The equipment on your side of the connection is generally the property owner’s responsibility, and the repair has to be done by a licensed electrical contractor, so it’s not a DIY job.

The most common defects we’re seeing are a point of attachment (POA) that’s too low, damaged or needs relocating, switchboards that need upgrading, and meter boxes or panels that are rusted, damaged or unsafe. Most are straightforward repairs for an experienced local electrician, and when a whole area gets notices at once, electrician diaries fill up fast, so don’t leave it to the last week.

Excel Power services Toowoomba homes, rural properties and commercial sites across the Darling Downs. Send us a photo of your notice and we’ll tell you what’s involved.

What Is an Ergon or Energex Defect Notice?

A defect notice is issued by your electricity distributor when an inspection finds a safety or compliance issue with the equipment that connects your property to the network. In Toowoomba, the Darling Downs and regional Queensland that’s Ergon Energy Network. In South East Queensland it’s Energex. Both are part of Energy Queensland, and the notices work the same way: they outline what the problem is and the timeframe for getting it fixed.

Because most of this equipment sits on your side of the connection, the property owner needs to arrange the repair. For rentals, that usually means landlords and property managers, and we’re happy to deal directly with agents and organise tenant access.

The deadline is on your notice for a reason. Unresolved defects can lead to further action from your distributor, and more importantly they can be a genuine electrical safety risk for your family, tenants or staff.

Ergon & Energex Defect Types: What They Mean and How We Fix Them

Your notice will describe the specific defect found at your property. This table covers the most common ones on both Ergon and Energex notices. Your exact repair depends on your site, so we always confirm on inspection.

DefectWhat it usually meansTypical repair
Point of attachment (POA)Where the overhead service line connects to your building is too low, damaged, deteriorated or in the wrong positionRaise, relocate or replace the POA, with new fixings or conduit as required
Consumer mainsDamaged, aged or non-compliant cabling between the POA and your switchboardReplace the mains cable and conduit to current standards
SwitchboardOld, damaged or unsafe board, such as ceramic fuses or no safety switches (RCDs)Switchboard upgrade with modern circuit breakers and RCD protection
Meter box / meter panelRusted or damaged enclosure, missing cover, deteriorated panel or unsafe wiring around the meterRepair or replace the meter box and panel, and make wiring safe
Other safety defectsExposed live parts, damaged conduit, or structures or vegetation too close to the connectionMake safe and rectify. If trees are involved, you may need an arborist as well.

Planning a solar or battery install too? A switchboard or meter box upgrade is a good time to get it done, because it’s cheaper to upgrade once than twice. We can look at both on the same visit.

Ergon & Energex Defect Notice FAQs

What is an Ergon Energy or Energex defect notice?

A defect notice is issued by your electricity distributor (Ergon Energy Network in regional Queensland, or Energex in South East Queensland) when an inspection finds a safety or compliance issue with the electrical equipment connecting your property to the network, such as the point of attachment, consumer mains, switchboard or meter box. The notice explains what needs fixing and by when.

What's the difference between Ergon and Energex?

Both are electricity distributors owned by Energy Queensland. Ergon Energy Network looks after regional Queensland, including Toowoomba and the Darling Downs, while Energex covers South East Queensland. Which one sends your notice depends on where your property is. The repair process is much the same either way, and we can help with both.

Who is responsible for fixing the defect?

In most cases the property owner is responsible for defects on private electrical equipment, and the repairs must be carried out by a licensed electrician. If you rent, forward the notice to your landlord or property manager straight away.

How long do I have to fix a defect notice?

The timeframe is stated on your notice and depends on the severity of the defect. Book a licensed electrician as soon as you can so the work is completed well before the deadline. If you’re close to it, contact us and tell us the date.

What happens if I ignore a defect notice?

Unresolved defects can lead to further action from Ergon or Energex, and they can be a real safety risk. Always follow the instructions and deadlines on your own notice, and if you’re unsure what it means, send it to us and we’ll explain it.

What is a point of attachment (POA) and why does it need relocating?

The POA is where the overhead service line from the network connects to your building. If it’s too low, damaged, deteriorated or in an unsafe position, Ergon or Energex can issue a defect notice. The fix is usually to raise, relocate or replace it so it meets current requirements.

Do I need a new switchboard?

Not always. Sometimes a repair or adding safety switches is enough, but older boards, such as those with ceramic fuses, are often better replaced. We’ll inspect and give you options with a written quote.

Will my power be off during the repair?

Often supply needs to be off for part of the work. We schedule this with you, coordinate with Ergon or Energex where required, and keep the outage as short as we can.

Can I use any electrician to fix it?

You must use a licensed electrical contractor. You’re welcome to get a few quotes, but do it early so you don’t run into the deadline.

Can you help landlords and property managers?

Yes. We regularly work with landlords, agents and property managers. Send us the notice and the property address, and we’ll arrange tenant access and send quotes and invoices to whoever you nominate.

Which areas do you service?

We service Toowoomba and the Darling Downs, including Highfields, Oakey, Pittsworth, Crows Nest, Dalby, Warwick, Clifton and Millmerran. If you’re not sure we cover your address, send us a message.

Can I upgrade to solar or a battery at the same time?

Yes, and it often makes sense. If your switchboard or meter box is being upgraded anyway, it’s the ideal time to plan for solar, a battery or an EV charger. See our residential solar options.
